ACCESS STATEMENT

REQUESTS, ISSUES AND SUGGESTIONS

Whitlingham Country Park is a beautiful 280-acre nature reserve on the outskirts of the city of Norwich. It is managed by The Whitlingham Charitable Trust and is free to access every day, all year round.

Nature lovers are attracted to this peaceful space bursting with a diverse range of wildlife and plant species. 197 species of birds alone have been seen and/or heard here since our records began.

The Park is a stunning setting for walks, cycling, fitness, picnics and even barbecues at our designated site. Visitors can also enjoy the rich history of the site, including exploring the ruins of Trowse Newton Hall dating back to the 1450s.

The Whitlingham Charitable Trust is committed to working with its partners to create a Park that is accessible to all, and one that offers the best available facilities for the comfort and enjoyment of its visitors.

There is level, or accessible sloped, access from our disabled car park spaces to:

  6. Great Broad circular path – 2.3 miles

  7. Bird hide – accessed from the North side of the Great Broad

Visual:

-A Braille map of the Park (pictured left) is located in the Flint Barn Car Park, near to the sloped access to the patio (pictured below right)

-All disabled toilet facilities have high contrast blue toilet seats and assistance rails.

-The café counter is 95cm high with dark grey panelling at the base and a pale wooden high contrasting counter-top.

-Full height glass doors to the café have high contrast markings.

Auditory:

-A counter hearing loop system is installed at the Café payment point.

Please select ‘T’ on your hearing aid(s) to use the hearing loop.

 

General:

-Assistance dogs are permitted in all areas of the Park.

Whitlingham Country Park has 5 visitor car parks

(all pay and display: £2 for one hour, up to £6 for all day parking)

  • Flint Barn Café car park (5 disabled parking spaces in total, 2 are next to the Changing Places toilet)

  • Lime Avenue Car Park (nearest for access to Whitlingham Adventure)

  • Old Quarry Car Park (find it opposite Flint Barn Car Park)     

  • Little Broad Car Park                                    

  • Picnic Site Car Park (closest access for barbecue/picnic site, play area and Whitlingham Woods)

 

All car parks have the same ticket system so once you have bought a ticket you can move to another area of the park if required. Yearly parking permits are available from car park managers RCP and offer excellent value for money.

 

Please note, pay and display charges apply for blue badge holders.

Cycling here:

15 minutes to cycle from the city centre (Norwich Market)

14 minutes to cycle from Norwich Train Station.

Bike racks can be found in the Flint Barn Car Park, Lime Avenue Car Park, outside Whitlingham Adventure centre, and at the Picnic Site Car Park.

Beryl bikes and electric scooters are available from the Flint Barn car park. Beryl hire charges apply and the selection on site is subject to availability daily.

Arrival

Entrances to Flint Barn Café:

  • Double automatic glass doors with sensors, width 182cm 

  • Café is staffed during opening hours if you need assistance

 

Access from the Flint Barn Car Park – There is an 8-metre tarmac sloped path from the car park, then 180cm width of flat tarmac in front of the café doors. The sloped path is 190cm wide.

Access from the patio - Access the flat patio via a 200cm wide ramp or flat tarmac access 210cm+ wide from Whitlingham Lane. There are also wide steps next to the ramp. 120cm+ width between the outdoor picnic benches. There are 6 spaces available for wheelchairs at our outdoor tables, width of each space is 84cm.

Getting around inside Flint Barn Café:

Space between café tables is 135cm.  Please ask staff for assistance if you have any additional requirements when using the café.

Public Toilets

Flint Barn Café toilets

There are two public toilets suitable for disabled visitors inside the Flint Barn Café. Both also have a baby changing station. Corridor access minimum width 110cm. Toilet door width 82cm. Internal room dimensions: 160cm x 286cm.

 

Flint Barn Car Park toilets

There are male and female toilet facilities as well as one standard disabled toilet, all accessed via a smooth concrete ramp.

Ramp access to disabled toilet 120cm width minimum. Door width 80cm, opens outwards. 60cm transfer space to the left of the toilet, no transfer space to the right of the toilet. Internal room dimensions: 223cm x 125cm.

Changing Places facility

Located in Flint Barn Car Park. Key card access is required alongside a Radar key. Occasional users can borrow a key card from the café and return it after use. If you wish to have your own key card for regular use, please contact us.

Ramp access has a minimum width of 140cm. Door opens outwards and is 110cm wide. Internal room dimensions: 302cm x 435cm. Transfer space of 75cm to the left of the toilet, no transfer space to the right of the toilet unless screen and bin are moved.
